Since 1999, a number of companies located on the Roissy - Charles de Gaulle airport hub have been examining the possibility of installing one or more High Speed Line freight terminals to serve areas located less than two hours' rail journey from the airport.
The decreasing number of night-time slots for air traffic in Europe, shifting energy costs and new HGV speed restrictions which came into force on January 1st 2007 all pose increasing problems for operators.
The expanding network of high-speed rail lines has made it possible to envisage complementary modal switching between air and rail transport (environmental policies, road network saturation, etc.)
Deregulation of European rail freight transport as of April 1st 2006 has provided further momentum for the project.
The relevant authorities and air freight operators are motivated by this sustainable development project.
The results of the feasibility study show that Carex fulfils operator expectations in terms of technical feasibility and its capacity to be integrated into overall operations and organisation by cost and destination.
